Measure for Measure

April 2004          Leap Theatre Company

Having played Isabella at university, Julia then played the role of Angelo in this production which employed cross-gendered casting. The intention was to highlight the different experiences of men and women in this play, but also to offer actresses the opportunity to play a wider range of Shakespearian roles than traditional casting would provide.

Leap Theatre Company specifially chose the location of Saint Saviour's Church in Knightsbridge, attracted by the possibilities the space presented for this particular play. St Saviour's was a modernised building, which had still kept many of its orignal architectural features. This offered great potential for giving a visual dimension to the opposing modern/gothic philosophies of the Duke and Angelo.
