La Dispute was the culmination of a two-year collaboration between Theatre du Preau in Normandy and The Theatre, Chipping Norton. Directed by Eric de Dadelsen, it featured a bi-lingual cast. La Dispute was performed in French, and the play was intersperced with scenes from Shakespeare in English - the spareness of Marivaux's writing being offset by the lyricism of Shakespeare.
The scenes from Shakespeare were assimilated into the narrative of the main play to give some characters a deeper backstory and develop the relationships already introduced.
After performances at Theatre du Preau and Chipping Norton, La Dispute was also shown at The Pleasance Theatre, London.
La Dispute asks which sex is the most unfaithful when it comes to love? Four children are raised in isolation and then let loose on each other. The play has been regarded as a fabulous, witty confection which also explores the darker side of human nature.
